You’re always working to improve, and you’re always being critiqued on your next performance. It’s not about what you’ve done. There’s always room to grow.

Working To Improve

Hi Everyone,
I can’t believe how fast this year is going with school and dance competitions! It’s already May and Nationals are around the corner. So, getting back to what I wanted to share with you. The topic is criticism. It sounds negative, right? I looked up the definition of criticism “the analysis and judgment of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work.” It’s a lot of fancy words but you see how merits and artistic work stands out? Well, in the world of dance, whether you’re doing a solo/duet/trio or group number we are going to get our critiques from the panel of judges. We listen to them the week after we perform and focus on areas of improvement with our teacher.

Individuals who care about you and want you to succeed

I have learned that a negative should be taken into a positive because it gives me the opportunity to get better at what I do, whether it’s a class project or dance. Although sometimes, it’s not easy listening to someone tell you about your weaknesses. I take it as a FREE tip that is going to help me get better and stronger as a person. When I listen to what the judges are saying and watch the video, I make the connection when I start to practice. What a great opportunity, to have my teacher/choreographer and the panel of judges helping me with my routine.

The next time you are listening to your critiques of any sort whether dance, sport, curriculum just remember these are individuals who care about you and want you to succeed. It’s up to you to make a difference for yourself and turn a negative into a positive. Listen, learn and practice are the keywords I leave you with on this blog.
